‘Must-have’ DVDs: The Lord of the Rings

The Lord of The Rings was directed by Peter Jackson. They are three films: The Fellowship of the Ring, The Two Towers and The Return of the King, and they are based on the books written by JRR Tolkien, who wrote them about 80 years ago.
The films were filmed in New Zealand, where Peter Jackson was born. He chooses this place because he thinks it’s look like the Middle Earth, the fictician land of the story.
The film is about a hobbit, and how he could chance the future of the world trying to destroy a magic ring, and the eternal war between good and evil.
The soundtrack is fantastic. It was composed by Howard Shore, who is a famous composer, and it’s one of the best soundtrack I’ve never listened to, and it be able to introduce you into the Middle Earth.
Although I prefer the books of Tolkien, I recommend The Lord of The Rings films to everybody, because I think they are some of the best films of the history.

`Must-have´ DVDs: Legends of the Fall: 1994

Legends of the Fall was directed by Edward Zwick in 1994. The film is based on the novel written in 1979 by Jim Harrison. It stars Brad Pitt as Tristan, Anthony Hopkins as coronel Ludlowes, Aidan Quinn as Alfred, Henry Thomas as Samuel and Julia Ormond as Susannah. The film was nominated to 4 Oscars and it won the Oscar for Best Picture.

The film is set in Montana in the 1930s. It was filmed on location in Canada.

The film is about the family Ludlow. The coronel Ludlow was a brave soldier who defended the Indians’ rights. After his defeat, he decided to go to live with his sons to a cottage in the middle of the mountains. There grew up his sons: Alfred, who was obedient and responsible; Tristan, who was difficult and adventurous, and Samuel, the youngest, the most idealistic. A day, Samuel comes to the family’s house with his girlfriend Susannah, who is a pretty woman. Very early, Susannah attracts the attention of the Samuel’s siblings and father. Tristan falls in love with Susannah and goes to look for new emotions to try to forget this forbidden passion. The three siblings go to the war (although their father doesn’t want it) and this fact marks their future life, because the youngest brother dies and the both surviving brothers fight to get the Susannah’s love.

I strongly recommend Legends of the Fall. It makes you cry, it has a memorable soundtrack and some breathtaking pictures. This film makes you think about the love between siblings and the love between a man and a woman, and ask you “Which of these forms of love is stronger?” If you saw this film, you would understand how difficult is to choose one of them.

THE BOY IN THE STRIPED PYJAMAS

The boy in the striped pyjamas was directed by Mark Herman in 2008. It is based on a best-selling novel of the same name written by John Boyne. Both the book and the film have received several awards.

It stars Asa Butterfield as Bruno and Jack Scanlon as Shmuel. The shooting of the film took place in Budapest, Hungary. The soundtrack was composed by James Horner, one of the most awarded composers in the world, who has worked with George Lucas, Spielberg, Oliver Stone,…The film is set during World War II, in 1942.

The story is about Bruno who is the son of a Nazi officer. He’s nine years old. His father promotes at work and they must leave their comfortable home in Berlin to go away. Now he’s bored. He must not go out of the garden. But, a day, he does it. He meets another child that lives on the other side of the fence and he wears a striped pyjamas. Bruno visits everyday to his new friend. It begins a friendship between the concentration camp officer’s son and a Jewish child. In the end, Bruno goes into the camp and both children die.

It is an interesting, emotional and sad film because you sense that the end is not going to be happy. I read the book and then I saw the film and I have to say that the film liked more, but you have to see it knowing that it is a film and not a documentary.

The film Pride and Prejudice was directed by Joe Wright in 2005. The film is based on the Jane Austen’ s famous novel with the same name. The film main stars are: Keira Knightley as Elizabeth Bennet, Mathew Macfadyen as Mr. Darcy, Donal Sutherland as Elizabeth’s father and Brenda Blethyn as Elizabeth’s mother. It has been nominated to four Oscars. The soundtrack is also remarkable, it was performed by an italian composer, Dario Marianelli.
It is set in the Georgian England. It was filmed entirely on location within England in the summer of 2004 and used several stately homes, including Chatsworth House in Derbyshire and Wilton House in Salisbury (as Pemberley), Groombridge Place in Kent (as Longbourn), Basildon Park in Berkshire (as Netherfield Park) and Burghley House in Lincolnshire (as Rosings . The Temple of Apollo and Palladian Bridge of Stourhead also appeared (as set in the Gardens of Rosings).
The film is a about five sisters: Jane, Elizabeth, Mary, Kitty and Lydia Bennet. Their lives suffer a big change when a wealthy young man (Mr. Bingley) and his best friend (Mr. Darcy) arrive in their neighborhood. It is a tale of love and values that shows us which was the society’s mentality of that age, where the parents were always worried looking for a good marriage for their daughters.
I strongly recommend watching Pride and Prejudice. It makes you travel to another age and to a very different world view. The soundtrack is so emotive that put you into the film without possibility of distraction.

    “MUST-HAVE” DVDs: FORREST GUMP : 1994

Forrest Gump was directed by Robert Zemeckis and it was based on a novel of the same name written by Winston Groom. The novel ridicule the idea that the American dream exist in the real Word. There are some difference between the story of the novel and the plot of the film. Forrest Gump was nominated for thirteen oscars but won six in 1995 for the best actor (Tom Hans), director, film, special effects, adapted script and montage.

The film is set in Alabama (North America) in the 1950s and 80s (three decades). It was shotting on location mainly in California.
Zemeckis use the digital technology to mix the fiction with the historical event. For instante Tom Hans who stars Forrest seems to greet the president John Fitzgerald Kennedy. We can watch in this film the sociocultural e historical event more representatives of the most recent history in the USA, as such Vietnam war, the Ku-Kux-Klan movement, the hippie movement, legend as Elvis Presly, the president Nixon…

This film is about a man with a intelligence quotient of 75 who tells the story of his life to some unknowns sitting on a bank while he is waiting a bus. Despite his limitations, Forrest, name which the star repeat again and again throughout the film, get to be a football rugby star, a player of ping pong, a multimillionaire, a soldier… and he became in an American hero. The director also introduce to spectators in a romantic story between Forrest and his impossible love called Jenny. Even so the Only thing that Forrest want is to be in the arms of Jenny, his unique and true love.
There are some important sentences in the philosophy of Forrest, which Forrest’s mum teach him and have been perpetuated:

    – Life is a box of chocolates, you never know what you are going to win.
    – Foolish is the one who makes foolishness.

I strongly recommend Forrest Gump because is a story wich entertains and thrills all kind of audience. Forrest is a person who never lost the innocence and fought to get his dreams. In my opinión the World would be better if more people were as Forrest., a person with a good heart.. On the other hands the interpretation of Tom Hans is breathtaking. Tom Hans took a long time removed the accent of delayed after shooting the film, I am not surprised because he convinced the public more demandin

    MYSTIC RIVER

Sean Penn won the Oscar for best actor and Tim Robbins at the best supporting actor. Mystic River was the first film wich won both awards since Ben-Hur in 1959.
The film is a drama based on the novel of the same name written by Dennis Lehane.

The plot is about the lives of three close friends since childhood until events happen that will change their lives. During a summer in 1975, Dave Boyle and two friends, Jimmy and Sean, are playing on a sidewalk in Boston when Dave is abducted by two men and subjected to sexual abuse over a period of several days. He escaped, but he lives haunted by his trauma. Dave becomes a primary suspect when Jimmy’s daughter, Katie, is found murdered. Sean, who is the chief of police, is charged with solving the murder, but Sean can not keep Jimmy take the law into their own hands.

I recommend it. It’s a masterpiece as lucid as tense with a plot that touches very deep ethical issues and delicate. A superb performance with a wonderful cast, an unexpected ending.
I’m sorry, but it’s the fragrance that the violet loose when lifting the shoe that crushed it.

Gerry Colon goes to prison with his father where spends 15 year trying to show his innocence , he is helped by a law called Garet. He has a hard time in prison when his father dies. But at the end he gest his freedom.
The cast is great, Enma Thompson play the character of Garet.
I strongly recomend” In the name of the father” because it’s based in a reality story. You can see a desesperated person fighting against polices and judges.
Polices who hide information that can help Gerry and his family to show their innocence . Polices who are pressured by people in the country who need a ghilty .
And public prosecutors who ignore IRA’S statements where they say, there are persons who are in prison unfairly.

She is a person very religious; she gives her children a strict education. The children have a strange illness, they couldn’t receive sunshine. The news servants arrived and a strange phenomenon started into home.
I strongly recommend “The Others” because during all the time you are exciting, intriguing and you can feel afraid of in several scene. The best of film is its surprising end.

    APOCALYPSE NOW

‘Apocalypse Now’ is an epic film which was directed by Francis Ford Coppola in 1979. A lot of great wonderful actors acted in the film but it starts Martin Sheen as Captain Willard and Marlon Brando, who plays Colonel Kurtz’s role. The film was nominated for 8 Oscars and it won two, a Palme d’Or and three Golden Globes. In 2001, Francis Ford Coppola released in Cannes an extended version called ‘Apocalypse Now Redux’, which received great reviews.

The film is set during the Vietnam War and the script was based in Joseph Conrad’s novel ‘Heart of Darkness’. It was shot in Filipinas and the filming was really hard.

The film is about a man called Captain Willard who is sent in a secret mission to the dangerous jungle in Cambodia in order to find and kill Colonel Kurtz, who is an ex member of the US Army Special Forces and lives in a hidden village. While they are looking for Colonel Kurtz, Willard and their soldiers suffer fear and drugs effects as well as horrible diseases and violent conflicts.

I strongly recommend “Apocalypse Now” because is an amazing film and it is considered one of the best films in history. It has a great soundtrack, and the picture is marvellous. I couldn’t choose a scene because from my point of view the film is almost perfect, a masterpiece.
